What are lab grown diamonds?
Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds that share the same physical, optical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds. The primary difference between the two lies in their origin. While mined diamonds are formed naturally over millions of years under extreme pressure and heat deep within the Earth’s crust, lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments within weeks using advanced technological processes.
How are lab grown diamonds made?
The production of lab grown diamonds involves either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) methods. HPHT replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds are formed, using high pressure and high temperature to transform carbon into a diamond structure. CVD, on the other hand, involves breaking down carbon-rich gasses to deposit carbon atoms onto a substrate, gradually building up the diamond layer by layer.

Lab grown diamonds are graded and certified using the same process as mined diamonds. Internationally recognised grading gem labs grade diamonds on the basis of cut, colour, clarity and carat. This determines their value, look and size. Some popular diamond certification labs are Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and International Gemological Institute (IGI).
